What type of event did you plan/attend and for who?

For my son’s first birthday, I wanted to mark the special occasion with a simple and inexpensive party theme. I’m a working mom and my resources to plan and prepare for a party are limited. With a little effort, imagination, and creativity the Hungry Caterpillar themed party was a success!

How far in advance did you begin planning and how did you decide on a theme?

The pressure of making my son’s first birthday special had me second guessing all of my party planning decisions. Was it age appropriate? Will I be able to execute the projects successfully? Was I going over the top? Was it costing me more than I had budgeted for? Did I like the overall theme? I lacked party planning experience and felt overwhelmed. When I simplified and identified my expectations, I was able to select a theme that fit the criteria I was looking for. Less than a week of party planning and one shopping trip for supplies, I was ready to party.

Where did you get some of your ideas for the decor/food?

I had just started using Pinterest when I began planning the specifics of the party. Although many of the ideas I pinned were out of budget and on a much bigger scale than we needed, I used them as sources of inspiration and adapted the ideas to better fit the specifics of the party.

Altering Pinterest ideas to fit your budget and supplies is a great idea!

What was your favorite part of the party and/or party–planning process?

The end result left me feeling satisfied and accomplished. It was simple and inexpensive but the results were impressive. I’m not a frequent DIY-er but was pleased with what I had done.

What was your least favorite part?

My initial indecision was frustrating. Just when I thought I found a theme, I would find another theme. I put too much unnecessary emphasis on getting the theme right which took away valuable time.

With regards to a budget, did you set one and if so, do you think you stayed within it or went over?

It was important for me to set a budget to prevent excessive and unnecessary spending. I prioritized my areas of spending and easily stayed well below my limits. With a little extra effort from myself and some minor DIY, the total cost for my party was only $10.00!

Say what!??! That’s amazing!

Feel free to share any of your favorite links/online stores that you utilized in planning or buying materials!
