Colgate “Bright Smiles, Bright Futures” Champions for Kids Campaign #cbias

March 18, 2013

Having boys of my own, I try hard to stress the importance of daily brushing habits, flossing, and keeping those smiles bright!  I recently had the opportunity to jump on board the Colgate “Bright Smiles, Bright Futures” Champions of Kids Campaign.  According to the Champions of Kids website, over 19% of all children ages 2-19 have cavities that have been left untreated and among regular dental appointments, preventive care should include brushing twice a day. Encouraging people across the country to purchase toothbrushes and toothpaste for kids, the Champions of Kids Campaign enables children to have access to the tools they need to encourage great oral hygiene.

After purchasing Colgate toothbrushes and toothpastes, I decided to donate them to a classroom at Braun Educational Center where my cousin and some friends teacher.  Braun Educational Center is an alternative school for students experiencing severe emotional and social disturbances in school.  My cousin teaches grades Kindergarten through Third grade, but currently only has second and third graders. She must be a saint because she teaches ELEVEN boys!

Luckily, Colgate offers Spongebob Squarepants toothbrushes and toothpastes so I scooped up every last one to accommodate the class. (The other option was Dora the Explorer, but I wasn’t sure how well that would go over!) My plan is to give each child one toothbrush and one tube of toothpaste that they can call their very own at home. My boys love having their own and I thought these boys would too!

Doesn’t Spongebob’s two bright white teeth and his big smile just encourage you to brush, brush, brush?

When I passed along these goodies to my cousin, I told her about the different designs on each one and told her to choose how to give them to each student. She talked about an incentive program in her classroom for good behavior and calculating how well each child does at maintaining their behavior. She told me that the students with the greater number of good behavior days would get to choose first and so on down the list until everyone received a set. I love the fact that not only will each student receive a toothbrush and toothpaste, but that the designs are being used to encourage good behavior!

I can’t wait to hear how this will influence their brushing habits in the coming months!

I bet the Spongebob supplies were a hit! (And what a great incentive for good behavior, too!)
