On Death & Dying

October 3, 2012

Almost three years ago, for Charlie’s first birthday, we bought his first pet{s} – miniature frogs. We named them Linus & Lucy. His second pet, Snoopy, arrived just two days later. Snoopy lived two months.

Linus & Lucy have survived everything – from what seemed like an earthquake (Charlie removing them from the dresser, causing cloudy water and massive shaking) to random taps to the tank. A few weeks ago, I noticed Linus was growing rather slim while Lucy was plumping up. After dropping food into the tank, I realized that Lucy was not only eating it all, but attacked Linus when he went after it himself.

Yesterday, I noticed Linus near the top of the tank, floating and with just a few sporadic movements. I anticipated that he was nearing the end of his little life here on earth. We debated for some time on what to do. We talked about flushing him back to the ocean like Nemo. Charlie complied with this for a bit and even told daddy that we need to send Linus back to his mommy and daddy. When I first suggested that we had to let Linus go, Charlie then said that “Linus needs to stay with his friends, like Charlie Brown the frog! They will miss him.” {heartbreak}

After discovering Linus this morning, we’ll be saying our goodbyes this afternoon. Death is depressing, even when it’s the smallest of your family.
