As the fall season approaches and the busy school schedule kicks off into full swing, our family will be heading into cooler weather with a plan to make our health and wellness a top priority. Even better, since August is Health Awareness month, now is the perfect time to focus a bit more on what makes us feel better and prepares us for the months ahead. One of my favorite weekly stops is Sam’s Club which has everything my family needs to stay happy and well.
One of my favorite finds at Sam’s Club is coconut oil, but finding uses for this bigger tub can be daunting! To help you get your feet oiled up, I’ve put together a few simple ways to incorporate coconut oil into your everyday life – aiding you in your path to be more health and wellness-focused!
1. As a substitute for cooking oil
The flavor of coconut is light and is one that easily passes in our family, but keep this in mind when cooking certain foods. I love substituting cooking oil in pancakes as a healthy alternative, cooking my morning eggs in it, and using as a standard way to prepare our chicken. If a recipe calls for vegetable oil, you can usually almost always substitute it for coconut oil.
2. As an oral hygiene option
The art of oil-pulling can seem daunting at first, but if you’re willing to give it a try, you will not be disappointed! Each morning, I take a spoonful of coconut oil and let it melt in my mouth until it turns into liquid form. Once it does, I swish it around for twenty minutes, much like mouthwash, and then spit it out. Oil-pulling is the perfect complement to regular oral hygiene practices. Twenty minutes seem too long to withstand with oil in your mouth? Swish around during your morning shower and the time will fly by.
3. As a morning smoothie boost
I LOVE making smoothies in the morning as part of our routine. Along with my traditional ingredients (mixed frozen fruit, 1 cup of coconut water, flaxmeal and spinach), I love to put a small tablespoon of coconut oil for extra flavor and health benefits. I try to incorporate it as part of my smoothie recipes whenever I can.
You need 1 cup frozen fruit, 1 cup coconut water, 1 tbsp. coconut oil, 1 tsp flax meal, 1 cup spinach. Blend and enjoy!

4. As a Body Scrub
This exfoliating scrub is simple to mix up and with only two ingredients, it is the perfect pantry spa treatment. I love using this scrub once a week and it makes a great gift in airtight jars – think teachers, aunts, friends, family. The coconut oil is a great moisturizer with added vitamins and the sugar acts as a great exfoliant. If the oil separates, simply mix with your finger and reapply. A hot shower might melt it a bit!
Blend 1/2 cup coconut oil with 1 cup brown sugar – be careful not to blend too much or the oil and sugar will separate.
5. As a Face Mask
Ready for one more spa treatment? This one also uses pantry staples, including coconut oil, and it’s the perfect midweek treat for your face. Put it in your weekly face routine and your pores will thank you! I love putting this on while getting ready to shower, brushing my teeth, or just a relaxing time reading and unwinding.
For this mask, you will simply need 1/4 cup coconut oil melted, 1/4 cup honey, 1/2 smashed avocado. Melt coconut oil until liquid and mash together with honey and avocado. Apply to face and leave on for ten minutes.
