Playroom Storage Bench

May 26, 2012

Have you ever thought of how to make better use of the space in your child’s bedroom or playroom?

Recently, on Facebook, I saw a project that I knew MANY of you would love, so I asked Colleen (the original creator) to talk about her steps here!

Playroom Storage Bench

Supplies

Cushion:

Plywood
(I went to Menards and bought a piece of plywood and my husband cut it to the size, 15×72.  FYI, I heard that both Lowes and Home Depot can cut plywood in the store.)

Foam cushion
(I went to Joann Fabrics, they will only cut the length so I had to cut the width at home. I used 2 inch foam but you can use whatever thickness you prefer.)

Batting
(Also from Joann Fabrics. I got 1/4 in thickness, again it’s personal preference.)

Fabric of your choice
(Take your measurements (LxW) add the depth of the foam (i.e. 2 in x2) then add at least 2 inches to wrap around. I think I got 3 yards.)

Staple Gun/Staples

Fabric/Craft Glue

Bench:

Expedit bookcase from IKEA (designed to go horizontal or vertical – for this project, horizontal)

Storage bins from Target

Steps

Expedit bookcase measures 15 3/8×72 7/8 and I made the bench 15×72

1. Cut plywood.

2. Cut foam.

3. Glue foam to plywood to stabilize.

4. Wrap batting around foam and plywood then staple to bottom, pulling slightly but not too much that you collapse the edges.

5. Wrap the fabric over the batting and staple to the bottom of the plywood (the corners are easiest to fold like wrapping a present).

6. I used the rubber feet that go on furniture to decrease the sliding of the cushion on the bookcase and that works ok.  I’m looking to try something else because it still slides a little – also to elevate it and prevent the staples from scratching.
  • Alternate option; cover staples with left over fabric and glue in place.

You can use a hot glue gun and run a strip of glue to cover the staple, it will add traction and provide a protection from the staples scratching the bookcase.
