Manly Mondays :: Monster Jam Review

February 9, 2013

Jim and my brother took Charlie & the nephews to see Monster Jam last night and check out what they thought!

________________________________________________________________

Nothing gets the testosterone flowing quite like inhaling exhaust fumes, sound so loud you need buy earplugs, and the main event, oversized pickup trucks jumping ramps and smashing junkyard cars.  It may have been Friday, Friday, Friday, but Charlie took me to see the monster trucks at Monster Jam anyways.

I’m convinced that every father take his son to see monster trucks at some point in their life.  Even though Charlie is a huge fan of monster trucks, he didn’t know any of them going into the night but now knows most of them by name now.  Like everyone, he really likes Grave Digger, but he was much more excited to see the Hotwheels truck (he loves playing online at www.hotwheels.com and watching videos of the crazy ramps and things they build at Team Hotwheels).  He even grew to like trucks I never heard before, especially Maximum Destruction, because of the sparks that fly out of it (it’s pretty cool to see in the dark), and El Toro, who snorts smoke out of his hood when jumping cars and ramps.  Sir Charles was even concerned about the fate of poor Zombie, whose wheel stopped moving after after a few massive jumps in the freestyle competition.  I had to console him a dozen times on the ride home that the mechanics would get him up and running for the next day.

My biggest concern coming into this whole thing was the sound.  I thought for sure we’d be up in the concessions avoiding the noise, but some cheap earplugs from Walmart did the trick.  In fact, the loudest car of the night was a smart car.  No lie.  They put a jet on a smart car, and the flames were so hot you could feel the heat when the car was on the other side of the track.  The show also mixed it up with a few 4-wheeler races and stunts.  The stunts were another Charlie favorite because they would jump what seemed 30 feet in the air, and some drivers would perform back flips.  And that wasn’t even the main event!  I’ll amend my prior statement – the Monster Jam is something I think every kid should see at least once.

Did you head out to Monster Jam yet? What did you think?
