Ever have one of those days?
Where it feels like the water keeps rising and you don’t have any life raft to save you?
They won’t eat breakfast. They’re fighting. They don’t like the clothes you picked out. Screaming, screeching, yelling, protesting.
And the water just.keeps.rising.
This past week in Chicago, we experienced a significant round of storms that left many of our areas flooded and overwhelmed with water. Coincidentally, I also had a pretty rough day in my motherhood career. Fighting, pushing, shoving brothers. An adamant four-year-old who used his selective listening that day. A two-year-old who decided that day would be a good day to revive his tantrums and exercise them when I tried to explain to him that no, he could not move smaller children out of the way so he could go down the slide. Or that he couldn’t screech in their faces to “MOVVVVE!” We promptly left the play place and we went back out into the rain. I left that place and he was kicking and screaming. I fastened him in his seat, plopped myself in the front seat and cried.
Being a mom is so hard sometimes.
And doesn’t it sometimes seem, moms, that the more the water rises on our bad days, those little people just don’t get it and amidst it all, even in their fightingwhiningcryingholdme days, they still smile.
And laugh.
And play.
And live.
What a lesson to have in all of that. That on those days when things seem ridiculously really terribly hard, life is still worth living.
And they are still worth living for.
{A friend – whose writing is breath-taking – wrote a post called “Mommy Is Beautiful.” On this day, I needed that. And one day, you’ll need it too.}
Many thanks to Shannan, Susan, and Ashley for these perfect pictures of that rainy day!

It sounds like what we get here. The kids get so upset when the park gets flooded out because it takes them so long to fix it.

Oh boy have I had those days! The entire spring break when it was storming and snowing and we couldn’t go outside. Everyone just got a little bit on each other’s nerves and the fighting began. Very frustrating. But at the end of it, it all turned out well. We learned to find fun time together, eating popcorn and watching Doctor Who reruns. Finally something they could all agree on!

Motherhood is difficult, but it looks like you made the best of it. The pictures of the flood are great, especially the little boy playing in the mud puddle.
