Animal Insides, Submarines, & Machines :: A Trip to the Museum of Science & Industry

May 27, 2013

We received courtesy tickets to the Museum & the Animal Inside Out exhibit. All opinions expressed are our own and  we really truly love this Museum. I highly recommend a family pass since you can’t possibly cover all of the Museum in one visit.

It’s not secret that we love the Museum of Science & Industry. We fell in love with Charlie Brown and the GREAT Exhibit as well!  Jim went this past weekend and has some thoughts to share…

Some of you may know this already, but Samantha and I gave up on giving our niece and nephews “stuff” for birthdays and instead give them the opportunity to experience new things.  For Jonathan’s birthday this year, I took him and a friend to the Museum of Science and Industry.  While the museum is great for just about any kid, this is right up Jonathan’s proverbial alley.

Animal Inside Out: A Body Worlds Production

Atop our list was the Animals Inside Out exhibit.  From the creators of the Body World exhibits, this exhibit displays animals in ways that the boys found fascinating.  From comparing the size of a giraffe’s brain with that of a human to the numerous animal cross-sections, the exhibit truly did get the kids asking questions.  Who knew you could learn things at a birthday party?  They found the circulatory system particularly fascinating — we found from an employee that the blood vessels of the deceased animal is pumped with plastic which hardens, then the other layers are removed, leaving complete animal sculptures made with just the circulatory system.  And they also found the human bladder fascinating.  Of course.

ANIMAL INSIDE OUT is not included in general admission and requires an additional timed-entry ticket. Tickets are $12 for adults and seniors (age 65 and older) and $8 for children (ages 3-11). Discounted tickets for MSI members are $6. Advance tickets are highly recommended and available online.

U505 Submarine

We of course took advantage of much else of what MSI had to offer, but the museum itself is just too big to do in one day.  Of special note, though, is that we toured the U505 submarine*.  This tour was particularly relevant given the Memorial Day weekend.  They naturally found the submarine a cool thing to be on.  Even better, the submarine bridged the gap between a cool thing to do and an appreciation of our nation’s history.  I feel like I have to brush up on my history afterward with all the questions they asked.

*The U505 submarine exhibit also has a cost in addition to the general admission. We have toured several of the special exhibits and have always had a wonderful experience!

Online Offerings

If you are looking for something fun and meaningful to do with your kids this summer and happen to be in Chicago, head down to the Museum of Science and Industry.  Bonus: Charlie loves to play the Simple Machines game online.

Stay tuned for an opportunity in the month of June that can earn you a free Museum admission ticket!
